Listening to Free Jazz/Free Improvisation

the following was posted on the 'what content type?' explanatory page, a habit that doesn't endear you to moderators, and which i've put a stop to.

I would not like to start a discussion [sorry, Cyrille - phil], but rather participate on the listening-experience of the people who read the comments and care to comment.

Kaoru Abe

H

I'm wondering if there are any videos out there of Kaoru Abe besides what's on youtube? He's my favourite saxophonist of all time.
Also would like to know what you guys think of his style.

Thanks

Rashied Ali 7/1/33 - 8/12/09

I'm very saddened to report that we lost one of the true great free jazz drummers at age 76. As I'm sure anyone here knows, Ali has performed in a variety of settings with the biggest names in jazz, in duos and famously with the late Coltrane band on Interstellar Space, Stellar Regions and more. Versatile and amazingly talented, his counterpoint and implied melodic lines brought a strong musical voice which helped advance and define free jazz. He will be missed and remembered.

Information on Bob Reid?

Hello all: new to the site and interested in info on Bob Reid, bassist, pianist and leader of the Emergency Sound, which I have newly discovered. I know he spent much time in Europe but I'm particularly interested in where he was born and early info. I read one reference that stated he was from Alabama, USA. Any info greatly appreciated.

Alvin Fielder Health Problems

Posted on another forum by Dennis Gonzalez...

"Alvin Fielder is very ill...

My long-time playing partner and drumming legend, Alvin Fielder, who lives in Jackson, Mississippi, is suffering from acute heart problems, and has been bedridden for a month and a half or so. He was scheduled to play Vision Fest last June with Kidd Jordan and declined due to failing health.

He is too weak to undergo the necessary open-heart surgery, but hopefully he will regain his strength soon...we need him back playing again.

Prince Lasha 1929-2008

Just saw this on allaboutjazz.

On vancouverjazz.com, musician and broadcaster Gavin Walker reported hearing
from John Handy that Prince Lasha has passed away:

"I was just informed by a reliable source (John Handy) that the legendary
flutist/saxophonist Prince Lasha passed away in Oakland, CA (Dec.
11). Many people will remember his own recordings (especially with Sonny
Simmons) and his associations on records with Eric Dolphy, Elvin Jones and
many others and in later years with Odean Pope. Lasha was born William

Pharoah sidepersons

On the first album (on ESP) by Pharoah Sanders, he has the following musicians :-
Jane Getz, Stan Foster, William Bennett, and Marvin Pattillo.

I know Jane Getz played also with Charlie Mingus, but does anyone know of recordings featuring the other people?

Kidd Jordan on NPR

I caught a piece on Kidd Jordan on NPR(!) yesterday. Pretty sweet that he might get heard a little bit by a wider audience. Not so sweet that it took 50 years. Here's the url: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91384626.

Also, the samples they played on the air were by no means his most fiery which means he was somewhat misrepresented because he is usually in that burning mode of his. Can't really complain though because it's cool that they covered him at all.
